Well it
"E-smoking" is a bit of a handful, "Misting" sounds far too fey, "Vaporizing" or "Vaping" has drug connotations.
There must be a better word for my new hobby! Suggestions?||| |||Ah, but we aren’t smoking "Es" though are we!|||Here’s the part I don’t like: In public comments in blogs posted with stories about the e products, there’s a perception that this is "Pretend Smoking." Using a funky electronic device is likened to a child sucking a straw with one end on fire (didn’t everyone try that?). You wanna smoke .. then smoke. You wanna pretend you’re a smoker, this is the perfect product. And the public thlnks e-smoking looks damn silly.
That eye-opening perception will keep me doing this in private. I’m not a pretend smoker and this is, to me, a way to avoid the hazards of sucking in real smoke with its tar content.
There’s also the question of whether this can become a lifelong practice for an ex-smoker. The jury’s out on how long our Chinese electronic gizmos will last. Ever fumbled a cigarette? What happens when my e-Pipe drops to a tile floor? Pile on legal questions sure to arise and you see that we’re in uncharted waters.
One blog poster was irate, asking if anyone could imagine an e-smoker walking the corridors of a school with the e-ciggie in his/her hand. I do understand the concern. Frankly, I don’t think this is THE answer to any question being asked. E-smoking certainly will not replace cigarettes, cigars or pipes. All are superior to this.
And if it becomes known as p-smoking, then I know I’ll puff my vapors in private.|||Hey TropicalBob,
interesting post, but I’m not sure I 100% agree with everything you say.
First up is the public perception issue - Sure, some might think it looks a bit silly, but IMO a large and increasing proportion of the public also sees smoking as looking, well if not silly then damned unattractive. My experience so far has had people intrigued and most smokers seem pretty happy/excited about it - since on the surface it appears the perfect way to continue the habit and not suffer the ill-effects.
I can honestly say that no-one has yet said it looks silly, or even that it is "pretend - smoking", most are pretty sophisticated in their understanding of the nature of nicotine addiction.
You are absolutely right that pipes and cigarettes are superior. But that is at the moment. You know how quickly technology develops, and pretty soon they will get it pretty much identical in sensation. In China, a huge number of people have adopted the e-cigarette, so consumer demand will drive forward changes in the technology.
The actual e-cigs will get smaller and lighter and hopefully take on their own identity, not trying to replicate a cigarette (the LED has to go!).
I don’t know how long you’ve been e-smoking, but most long-term e-smokers seem to have had at least one e-cig give up on them. The suppliers are by and large more than happy to replace them at no-charge, knowing full well that the internet is a pretty good place to have your reputation destroyed. Although I do agree that being without your nicotine fix will send you back to the ciggies quicker than anything.
Still, it is all about individual taste!|||Real pipes and cigs may be superior but having recently spent a miserable year as an ex smoker I have found that the e-cig has filled the void. I am a nicotine addict and I loved smoking. I was a non smoker only because of public pressure and health worries. The e cigarette has definitely lifted my spirits but I no longer cough or smell terrible or have to stand in the street like an outcast to enjoy nicotine.
Having said all this I would feel more comfortable using a properly regulated product designed for people who do not wish to give up nicotine withoiut being social outcasts. As the saying goes "once a smoker, always a smoker". The e cigarette probably still has some health issues but perhaps when compared with alcohol abuse and obesity it is preferable. Have you ever met a morbidly obese smoker? When I quit smoking it was a huge struggle to avoid weight gain. This problem has now been solved for me.
The real problem in future is the chance that governments will ban e-cigs before they really develop into quality products.
As for walking through a school with one - well! would you walk through a school with a glass of wine or a pint in your hand?
We don’t want a "fake" cigarette. We want a nicotine delivery system that ia pleasant to use. I know people who have been chewing nicotine gum for more than 10 years. If they must have nicotine it may as well be in an enjoyable form.
Maybe we should design a really slick designer e cig and set a new fashion |||Excellent replies, both of you. I agree with much of what you say. I, too, hope e-smoking is accepted by both smokers and governments. I’m not sure where to place my bets on either, however. I’m more fearful that governments will snuff this out as a delivery system for an addictive substance than I am that smokers wanting off their unhealthy habit/addiction will reject it. I know I need all the help I can get to stay off cigarettes.
So as I puff my e-pipe on a rainy afternoon, I wonder:
1. Would James Bond pull out an e-ciggie while lying in bed with Pussy Galore? Would he offer her a vape?
2. Would Winston Churchill say, "Damn the torpedoes, I need a good e-cigar?"
3. Would Albert Einstein switch to an e-pipe on the chance that he might live long enough to develop a Theory of Irrelativity?
I hear you. We live in a different time. What once was glamorous is now disgusting. The pastime of nobility has degenerated to the point where the highest percentage of smokers is in the lowest income and educated groups. Smokers are the new pond scum. We who became addicted decades ago are confronted publicly by hand-waving fanatics convinced smokers kill babies. It’s nasty out there in the real, cold world for the addicted smoker.
Sad. Will the last smoker please blow out the match?
Gotta check the mailbox now to see if my new e-cigar arrived.
