What should we call this thing we do ?

Posted in General E-Smoking Discussion by janty on the November 4th, 2008

It strikes me that, smoking, e-smoking are not the right words to be using to describe what we do is called. It has negative conotations to my mind. Even referring to the hardware as e-cigarettes, e-cigars, e-cigarillos or e-pipes doesn’t quite seem appropriate, but does at least describe the shape of them.

Vaping is a word I’ve seen used a bit … are we happy with that or should we try and come up with something else ? How should it be pronounced vaping as in ape or vaping as in zap ?

So c’mon all you wordsmiths, stick on the thinking caps, lets see what collectively we can come up with.
For those of you that have linguistic skills, how about a word in another language, english has a long history of adopting words from other countries, what have you got to offer ?|||You might find it easy to believe that we’ve been around this bush. It was one of the first topics discussed when this forum went up. Smokey Joe, our main forum man, posed your very question. There never was a resolution, BTW, but it doesn’t matter. The term e-smoking took off on its own and there’s not much we can do to stop it.|||Nothing wrong with dragging it out of the depths of the wardrobe and giving it another kick around though is there Bob ?|||Not at all.|||I think E-smoking is what you are going to be left with mate because that is what it is known as :!:|||I tried calling it vaping - but keep going back to e-smoking. Thats what we are doing.||| |||Vaping doesn’t sit to well with me either, I do kinda like e-smoking, but it doesn’t describe it well enough. That’s why I think we should try and be a bit inventive and see if we can’t come up with a new word to use. that’s also why I suggested that perhaps there may be a suitable word in a language other than english.|||If we’re looking for a word that describes what we do, this is perfect …

Suckers.|||LOL you’re right, it’s a shame, but you’re right … the term appears to have been introduced right at the introductionary onset of this technology by the developers of it, the Chinese. It’s a shame they didn’t consult with their market before creating a name
